An air raid caused the death of a third of the civilian population and wounded enormous numbers of people. The Nazi planes dropped almost 50,000 kilos (over 110,000 pounds) of bombs, and then returned to strafe the Basques who had taken refuge in the fields. That fatal Monday was market day and the streets of the town were overflowing with families of peasants and refugees. Even the hills were bombed and according to some witnesses the caseríos burned like candles all through the following night.
